Mayalasian Open 2012 - 31 Aug to 2 Sept

This poster has been sent out by the NZDC. I do not think any Kiwi has ever played in it. If you know of anyone who has drop us a line with the details and I will put it on the blog. It is a nice poster. The prize money is shown in Malayasian Ringgits. A 1000 ringgits equals roughly $400 NZ dollars. If you want an entry form e-mail me at peterpage@xtra.co.nz and I can send you one.

Teachings of Awa Kenzo (1880 - 1939)

Awa Kenzo was a Japanese Archery Master. Below are some of his teachings which might be helpful in darts;

- Everyone tries to shoot naturally, but nearly all practioners have some kind of strategy, some kind of shallow, artificial, calculating technical trick that they rely on when they shoot. Technical tricks ultimately lead nowhere. Shoot without shooting.

- Each shot shows what you have suffered through, what you have practiced.

- If you are upset or nervous, that is proof you lack something. Do not be sad or gloomy-foster virtue, feel compassion, and you can save even devils.

- Human beings always cling to things. Practice begins when you stop clinging.

- If you look at the target as your enemy you will never make progress. The target is a reference point, not your opponent.

- Our Way is ultimately a solitary pursuit. It is based  on establishing your true self, and only you can do that. You must break out of your shell on your own. We are looking to Shoot straight,  free of distraction.

- If you want to win practice virtue. If you win with virtue, your opponent buries himself. That is the true victory. Trying to win relying on technique is a great mistake. If you want to emerge victorius, penetrate the mysteries of Shooting. Give up dissapation, forge your spirit, overcome sloth and pride. In Shooting respect and being high- minded are the keys.

These teachings and others come from  the book Zen Bow, Zen Arrow. The life and teachings of Awa Kenzo written by John Stevens. I got this book from Amazon and found it an interesting read.

Another good read if you like this sort of thing is Zen and the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigal which is the story of how Herrigal went to Japan to teach at a Japanese University between the wars and learnt archery from Awa Kenzo.

Kenzo taught archery as a martial art and competed with success at tournaments throughout Japan. At about the age of 41 he seemed to have a revelation and began the doctrine of the "Shooting Way" and taught  his students shooting without shooting.

Big Gordy Special Request

Hi everyone. I do not normally do Trade and Exchange on the blog but my friend Gordon Comrie ( Big Gordy) has a special request. In July and early August his son and his son's girlfriend are coming to NZ to visit. Gordon needs the use of a 6 or 7 seat people mover. He wants to swap for about one month his Hyundai Tuscon ( 5 seater) for a 6 or 7 seat people mover. If you can help him he can be contacted at biggordy8@xtra.co.nz or rung at 0211806341. He lives in Meadowbank, Auckland.

Despite the impression you may get from the picture he never drinks and drives. I can vouch for that as we play in the same team every week.

Early Report NZ Masters

I have not got the full results from the NZ Masters but I see they are not on the NZ Dart Council site yet. What I do know is that Corinne Hammond of Australia won the Ladies singles. When I left for the airport Wayne Carey and Greg Moss were slogging it out in the men's final best of 11 and Greg was a little ahead. The trip to the airport was a bit hairy. Anna Neho, Wellington player, kindly took us in her 7 seat people mover. We managed to fit 9 people in and luggage. The seating for the Canterbury players was fairly tight which caused a few laughs. We got there safely though thanks to Anna.

The picture below shows Auckland player Peggy Wikaira gifting leading Japanese player Rachel Mariko Maitland an Auckland shirt. Even in Japan they appreciate a Region 2 shirt. Rachel mainly plays soft tip darts in Japan.

It was very cold down there. The coldest I have experienced in trips to Wellington. It felt like there was snow in the air. The hall warmed up well enough and the event was well organised. There was about 77 men and 39 ladies. There was a group of players from Japan and another from Australia. Two players come from Dunedin, 4  from Christchurch, 5 from Auckland, a few from Nelson and a lot from lower North Island.The darts overall were to quite a high standard especially in the latter rounds of the men's. Some of the legs were as good as any English professional might throw.

I took some video of the tournament but have had trouble loading it on to you tube. I did get some of it on there showing the card part of the men's singles. Look on You Tube under title NZ Masters Darts 2012  for a look. I hope to improve my video skills and put more on in the near future.

Super Series Event 5 This Thursday. All Welcome. Current prize Pool $1255

Canterbury Open

I am back from the Canterbury Open. The results for the singles are on the NZDC website. Some other results were;

Peter Hunt and Lorene Gilliam winning the mixed pairs on the Saturday.

Craig Caldwell and Jonathan Silcock winning the men's pairs on Sunday.

It was a very enjoyable weekend. Not that expensive to get to if any player is contemplating going next year. From Auckland on an earlybird fare was $206 return. Accommodation is a short walk and $46 a night. We flew in on an early flight Saturday and got there an hour before check in.

It was a very high standard of darts with quite a few NZ and ex- NZ players playing. Players came from Invercargill, Dunedin, Wellington, West Coast, Auckland and every where between.

It was well run and organised. 55 men and about 19 ladies played in the singles. It was best of 5 legs on the card system so you had fair go to qualify.

The organisers announced that next year they will in February be hosting another NZDC ranking tournament  to replace the Mosgiel 5000. They have sent a proposal to the NZDC. Look for some confirmation in the near future hopefully at the NZDC nationals in Rotorua.

There was a few earthquakes. The only one I felt was a 4.4 on the Sunday night when I was sitting on the couch in the motel.

24 players took part. 180's were scored by Monty Tuhua (2) and Dave Owen. The highest finish was Monty Tuhua 111.
Next Thursday evening West City are holding their mixed pairs championship which is open to members only. For other players there will be another tournament to run along side so all players are welcome. Check in by 7.15 pm.

Good luck to all the players taking part in the Victory Tournament in Napier over the weekend and all those travelling to the Canterbury Open.
