Early Report North Island Masters

Jonathan Silcock defeated Mark McGrath in the men's singles final held at the Hastings Darts Association hall earlier today. Mike Day was third equal. The other third equal player I am not sure as my correspondent was under the weather when I spoke to him. I did not go. The first time I have not been there for 5 years. Apparently numbers were down on previous years.
In the ladies final Polly Luke defeated Jo Steed.

Book Review Bellies and Bullseyes

I have just read Bellies and Bulleyes by Sid Waddell. Sid of course was a well known Darts commentator for TV first on the BBC and later on Sky TV. He passed on after a long illness just recently. This book was published in 2008 and is an autobiographical account of his career which also tells the story of darts during the time he was a commentator. There are some interesting insights into the split in darts that occurred between the BDO and the 16 professional dart players who formed a break away group and world championship which eventually evolved into the PDC. I learned a few things about what happened and why it happened that I did not know. The lack of cooperation between the two organisations is still evident today 30 years later. There are chapters on Jocky Wilson, Eric Bristow and Phil Taylor. Quite a few funny stories and hilarious goings on involving Sid and others. I found it an enjoyable read.Sid's unique personality comes through in the writing in the same way his commentating was unique. There was only one Sid Waddell.

I was able to borrow a copy from the Auckland City Council library at St Lukes. I think you can still get copies online if you are a bit far from the library.

Fail... missed the board !

2013 BDO World Championship. Rune David vs Wesley Harms.
Rune David completely misses the board with one of his darts. Check the face of the referee when he does, priceless !

The ref could have bent down to pick it up for the poor bloke !

Daylight savings ends... but there is warmth around !

So daylight savings has ended for another year. Winter is on the horizon and maybe it has been a slight bit chillier the last few days. A good hot bowl of soup normally warms me up but this weekend I saw something else that warmed the cockles of my heart... and gave me hope for the rest of 2013 when I step up to the oche. I watched the latest round of the PDC Premier League Darts on Sky TV. The first game up saw two times world champ Adrian Lewis v Raymond van Barneveld. Lewis needed a good result to ensure not relying on other results to avoid relegation.
At 1-3 down Lewis needed to hold his throw to pull back to 2-3, and left 85 to finish. He missed it on his next throw leaving himself just 5 to finish. He then had three more darts hitting a single 1, then missed double 2 hitting a single 2 and then missed double 1 hitting a single 1... BUST ! van Barneveld gave him another chance... Lewis had three more darts to finish... same result, hits a single 1, then misses double 2 hitting a single 2 and then misses double 1 hitting a single 1... BUST ! van Barneveld steps up and this time finishes the leg... and goes on to win 7-2. Pressure darts and the former world champion folds like a pack of cards. I think it is warming to know that I can also fold like that when under pressure on the oche and the next time it happens to me (which won't be too far down the track), I will remember Lewis' performance and think "I still have hope, I just played like a two times world champ !"
